Detectives are appealing for witnesses following a robbery at a jewellers in Petersfield.

Just after 4.30pm on Thursday, January 16 four men entered the jewellers in Rams Walk armed with tools. They threatened staff and stole a large amount of jewellery. It is believed another man was waiting outside.

The suspects were wearing dark coloured clothing and some were wearing balaclavas or face masks.

The offenders made off in a silver Peugeot 406. This car was then involved in a collision with a marked police car driven by officers who were responding to this incident. The collision happened in Tilmore Gardens and resulted in the police car ending up on its roof. The occupants of the police vehicle - a police community support officer and a police constable - were not seriously injured.

The offenders made off on foot in the direction of the A3.

Detective Inspector Justin Torgout said: “This is a busy time of day when many people may have been returning home after work, school or college. Were you in the area yesterday afternoon? Did you see the men going into or leaving the jewellers or did you see them run off from their vehicle in Tilmore Gardens?

“We’d particularly like to hear from a member of the public who spoke to shop staff following the incident and may have information which will assist our investigation.

“Fortunately no one from the jewellers was injured but this was an extremely frightening incident for the staff and we are keen to find those responsible as soon as possible. If you have any information which could assist this investigation, please contact us."

Anyone with information is asked to contact Winchester CID on 101 or the charity Crimestoppers line on 0800 555 111, where information
